Before being known by crossword-puzzle enthusiasts, Aÿ was known in the Middle Ages for its noticable quality of wine, not yet sparkling but already appreciated by royal tables. In the XVth and XVIth centuries, kings of France and the most famous sovereigns of Europe purchased vineyards in Aÿ.
